John Edward Crock, 58, became star-stuff on April 28, 2014. His was a life of many hair-raising and glorious adventures, which continued even after his January 2013 diagnosis of melanoma. A lover of science and nature, John was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to John Edward and Agnes (Dusek) Crock, and grew up on a family farm outside of Mechanicsville, Iowa. After graduating from the University of Northern Iowa, John began graduate studies at Washington State University. Several years after completing an M.S. in entomology and founding Hyperspud Sports, a backcountry gear and apparel store in downtown Moscow, he obtained a Ph.D. in biochemistry from WSU under the mentorship of Rod Croteau. He is survived by his wife, Laurene Sorensen; his siblings Carol Werner, Marcia Simpson, and Thomas Crock and their families; and several pets, including his goat Albert. Most importantly, he is survived by a galaxy of dear and loyal friends.
